Folk Life Defined

"... what is Folklife? The easiest way to explain is to take the word apart. Folk = People. Life = Music, at least for the folks involved in Folklife.

The Humboldt Folklife Society is a group of dedicated volunteers who love music, mostly folk music, but certainly not exclusively...

Their goal: put music in everybody's life."

Come celebrate the first Barn Dance of the new year on Friday, January 27, from 7:30-11 pm at the Arcata Veteran's Hall. Our 2012 kickoff dance features the Striped Pig Stringband and visiting caller Michael Ismerio. The dance benefits Coastal Grove Charter School - admission is $7 general, and $6 for HFS members, students and seniors. Kids under 12 free!

The Country Pretenders Playhouse Makeover Fundraiser - Saturday, January 28

The Country Pretenders - Fred Neighbor, Brooks Otis, Joyce Hough, Gary Davidson and Tim Gray - will bring their deep country sound to The Arcata Playhouse on January 28.

Steeped in the tradition of Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and Bob Wills, the Country Pretenders feature rich vocal harmonies backed by the haunting wail of the pedal steel guitar. So put on your cowboy boots and revisit the honky tonk!

The show is a benefit for the Playhouse Makeover Project with Rotary Club of Arcata Sunset. Individual makeovers will be auctioned off at the event to help wrap up fundraising for the Playhouse renovations last summer.

Doors open at 7 pm with music starting at 8 pm. Tickets are $15-20 sliding scale and are available at Wildwood Music, Wildberries Marketplace, and The Works, or reserve at (707) 822-1575.
