HFS Upcoming Events

The Pine Leaf Boys - Sunday, August 22nd at Humbrews

HFS presents the Pine Leaf Boys on Sunday, August 22nd at Humbrews in Arcata. Show starts at 8 pm. Tickets are available at door: $10 students/HFS members, $12 general admission. This show is 21yrs+ only.

Louisiana's finest, the Grammy®-Nominated Pine Leaf Boys have made a name for presenting their own inimitable brand of Cajun music with youthful exuberance. Hailing from southwest Louisiana, the Pine Leaf Boys, known for their wild shows and thoughtful arrangements, have breathed new life into Cajun music, reviving ancient songs and bringing them to the bandstand.

Being described as, "... the link that connects the young and the old generations," and, "the best new, energetic, and fun Cajun band in a very long time," the Pine Leaf Boys play the old-fashioned dance hall standards while making a priority to bring many of the more obscure songs of past masters into their repertoire and play them with gusto. Their mission is to present the real Cajun music of their ancestors to the world and prove that it is still thriving and full of life.

All five members, in their early 20s - Wilson Savoy, Courtney Granger, Jon Bertrand, Drew Simon, and Thomas David - have been steeped in music since childhood. Hailing from farms and villages in Cajun country, the Pine Leaf Boys have been making a name for themselves not only for their youth, but also by preserving the traditional Cajun sound while allowing it to breathe and stretch. They present their music on twin fiddles, accordion, bass, and drum.

Jams & Sessions

The new Arcata Bluegrass Jam runs 6:30-8:30 pm on the second Wednesday of every month, at Redwood Yogurt in Arcata. All bluegrass instruments are welcome; players should be able to play along with basic chord structures on bluegrass tunes. Jon Forsyth and Judy Hageman are the hosts!

The Second Sunday Celtic Music Session is currently on hold, while we seek a new location. This is normally held as an open session hosted by Seabury Gould with Scatter the Mud as the core group - people are invited to bring instruments and voices (or just come and listen) for the sharing of Irish traditional/Celtic music of "mostly tunes and some songs." Scatter the Mud "enthusiastically plays Celtic music with spirit, imagination and conviviality!" Call Seabury at 845-8167 or visit his website for more information.

Song Circles

The Song Circle with Joel Sonenshein has moved to the first Tuesday of every month - from 7 to 9:30 pm, presented in association with Arcata Parks and Rec and held in the new Arcata Community Center. Participants are encouraged to bring copies of their favorite tunes to pass around; this is an anything goes gathering! Whether you are into traditional or contemporary folk, 60's rock or even the occasional show tune, this circle usually offers something for everyone and has been known to can go places others have not dared. So bring your voice and come and join in on the fun. Admission is free.

Join us on the third Wednesday of every month for a Song Circle with Seabury Gould at the Arcata Library Conference Room (500 7th Street) at 7:30 pm. Bring your voices and songs to this monthly gathering for singing together! (Note: Many of you know Seabury from his work with children - but this circle, while for people of all ages, is geared for adults.) Questions? Call Seabury at 845-8167 for more information. Note: for April 2010 only, the Song Circle with Seabury has been moved to the 28th (rather than the 21st)!
