Volunteer Call

Looking for a way to meet and play with other music and art-minded people while keeping the HFS running? We are always seeking volunteers to help us with events, mailings, posters, jams, etc. Drop us an email or give us a ring at 822-5394 if you would like to join the Folklife volunteer team.

We're also looking to expand the pool of hosts and houses for house concerts! If you're willing to open your house to live acoustic music, more spaces are needed that are:

  • Located between McKinleyville and Eureka and easy to find

  • Large enough for about 40 people (folding chairs can be provided)

  • Parking for so many cars

  • Mold-free and preferably cat-free (more people have cat allergies than dog allergies)

Please contact us if you're interested by email or phone (HFS message line, 822-5394). If you're considering it, but want more info, contact Joel for insights on hosting a house concert.

Concert Booking

Because we have to work within the constraints of rotating venues and volunteer schedules, we generally book only about one act per month during the year, mostly well-established performers or exciting up-and-comers on the tour circuit. We also recommend that you contact the venues directly for booking.

Please be aware that HFS is unable to offer guarantees on our shows (although we do offer an excellent percentage of the door), so if you need a guaranteed gig, you will definitely want to contact a venue straight off.

Local folk venues include:

If you're not familiar with the area, note that a show in the region should generally be planned as a stopover on a through-trip from north to south or vice versa; it's not often that proceeds cover more than travel expenses.

The Media

If you have a gig date booked, we recommend that you contact Bob Doran at the Northcoast Journal, as he interviews many performers as they tour the northcoast, and KHUM radio, as they do more in-studio touring artist features than any other local station.

We recommend that you send your CDs and promotional packages to the following radio stations. If you have booked a gig here, make sure to include the date in your note to the stations!

  • KHUM Radio Without the Rules - live, commercial but community-driven, freeform (un-syndicated) station - streams live

  • KMUD - live, community run, freeform, southern Humboldt radio station - streams live

  • KHSU - university station with both syndicated national programming (NPR, Democracy Now, National Native News) and local freeform djs - streams live

Co-Promotion

Due to the sheer workload, we do not promote non-HFS events unless the event is both acoustic folk and there is a discount provided to card-carrying HFS members. If it is a folk show and the venue agrees to offer a discount, please email us four weeks in advance with the show information, including date/time, performer blurb and ticket price and discount!
