Folk Life Defined
"... what is Folklife? The easiest way to explain is to take the word apart. Folk = People. Life = Music, at least for the folks involved in Folklife.
The Humboldt Folklife Society is a group of dedicated volunteers who love music, mostly folk music, but certainly not exclusively...
Their goal: put music in everybody's life."
Bob Doran - North Coast Journal, July '09

The Pine Leaf Boys - Sunday, August 22nd at Humbrews
HFS presents the Pine Leaf Boys on Sunday, August 22nd at Humbrews in Arcata. Show starts at 8 pm. Tickets are available at door: $10 students/HFS members, $12 general admission. This show is 21yrs+ only.
Louisiana's finest, the Grammy®-Nominated Pine Leaf Boys have made a name for presenting their own inimitable brand of Cajun music with youthful exuberance. Hailing from southwest Louisiana, the Pine Leaf Boys, known for their wild shows and thoughtful arrangements, have breathed new life into Cajun music, reviving ancient songs and bringing them to the bandstand.

|
Being described as, "... the link that connects the young and the old generations," and, "the best new, energetic, and fun Cajun band in a very long time," the Pine Leaf Boys play the old-fashioned dance hall standards while making a priority to bring many of the more obscure songs of past masters into their repertoire and play them with gusto. Their mission is to present the real Cajun music of their ancestors to the world and prove that it is still thriving and full of life.
All five members, in their early 20s - Wilson Savoy, Courtney Granger, Jon Bertrand, Drew Simon, and Thomas David - have been steeped in music since childhood. Hailing from farms and villages in Cajun country, the Pine Leaf Boys have been making a name for themselves not only for their youth, but also by preserving the traditional Cajun sound while allowing it to breathe and stretch. They present their music on twin fiddles, accordion, bass, and drum.

Folklife on the Air - Sundays at 5 pm on KHSU!
Folklife has a new show on KHSU from 5-6 pm on Sundays, following in the footsteps of Don Wolski and the Bayside Hayride! With hosts Sally Goodin, Craig Kurumada and Jay Stallman, our new radio show explores the wild and wonderful landscape of folk music.
Tune in to hear a wide range of traditional and contemporary American roots music, including acoustic blues and jazz; old-time stringband and bluegrass; historical and contemporary folk; world-wide acoustic influences; cajun and zydeco; Western swing, honky tonk, and rockabilly; and old country to alternative country.
In the coming season, we'll have local musicians into the studio, feature field recordings with Humboldt performers, and keep you up to date on the latest music events and educational opportunities around the county.
You can hear us on the internet or on the FM-dial at 90.5!
